A Challenge for Rose Bowl Fans

Something occurred to me in discussing the 1983 bowls, which I wanted to pull out for a separate post. As I've said, I never much cared about the Rose Bowl. Apparently, a lot of people do. Up until 2001, it had it's great tradition of matching up the Pac-10 and (typically) the Big-10 champion, which by count means 87 games under a glorious system that truly personified what college football was all about. So here's my challenge:

Name 10 really good games.

Walk me down memory lane. Lay out for me the games that objectively were the the clash of titans with nail-biting endings. Not the ones that are remembered for historical reasons - under no circumstances can that 1902 game where Stanford quit in the third quarter be considered good football - and not the ones where a plucky underdog makes it to its first Rose Bowl in however many years only to lose (or win) a mediocre game. Just the days where they played really good football in Pasedena.

Because honestly, I can find much with Google. I mostly geat stuff on the Great Rose Bowl Hoax, or mentions of the recent Texas-USC game. There's this oddly formatted article that goes 10 deep (despite the title), but includes a couple of routs, one game involving Texas, and at least one game where a team came into it with a 7-4 record.

So have at it. Ten games of the like we'll never see again, because the mean ol' BCS came and stole your ball. From memory would be nice, but not required. Enlighten me.

Nebraska - 1941
Nebraska's first bowl game was in the Rose Bowl against Stanford in a losing effort, off the top of my head the score was 21-16, something in that range .

otherwise.... good point.

Is this a joke?
What has the Rose Bowl ever done to you?  Maybe you are sick of USC hype from espn, which I can understand, but don't throw a great sporting event under the bus because of it.  The rose bowl is college football.

Really how much research did you do?

The Rose Bowl used to be a great American sporting event, the old west vs. the new west, the game was the deciding factor for many NCAA football championships, dont disparage it because UNC was never involved.

from 1900 to 2001 a team playing in the Rose Bowl was the NCAA champion 32 times--more than any other bowl.

To respond to your email here are ten great games with 20 great teams, believe me there are many more than than 10, but that is what you asked for.

In no order:

Great Rose Bowls
There have been many great Rose Bowls over the years. Some that come to mind...

1980-- USC vs. Ohio State (last second victory for Trojans over Buckeyes.

1997-- Ohio State vs. Arizona State (Buckeyes beat Jake Plummer in final minute)

2005-- Texas vs. Michigan (Back and forth barn burner, with Longhorns winning.)

1969--Ohio State vs. USC (Buckeyes beat O.J. and win the National Championship)

1975-- USC vs. Ohio State

1978--Washington vs. Michigan

1985--USC vs. Ohio State

1993--Michigan vs. Washington

1942--Oregon State vs. Duke (Only Rose Bowl not held in California, played in North Carolina because of WWII)

1974--Ohio State vs. USC... Ohio State and Archie Griffin pound the Trojans
