WHY RIVALS NEED TO SHUT UP SOMETIMES!!!!!

via vmedia.rivals.com

I took notice recently of Heather Dinich's ACC blog on Espn.com and a question stood out to me. WHY SHOULD UNC FANS HAVE HIGH EXPECTATIONS? It was from a guy in <strike>Raleigh</strike>Moo-town(No bias of course!!!) about why she was pushing UNC for high expectations. The poster used that idea that UNC was returning the majority of its players from last year as the reason why you shouldn't be excited about 2010. Pointing to the Top 10 defense that gave up 4 touchdowns to NC STATE (Shocker there!!!) and the lack of production at times on the offense.

This is why rival should shut up sometimes.

Now I can understand why some would have questions about UNC, I have them myself. I can understand you not thinking they can do much given the track record of high expectations with this program. For the life of me, I cant understand why a rational person(assume NCSU fans are rational) would not know why UNC has raised expectations. They beat both Va Tech and Miami last year, both of whom you could call the favorites this year to win the Coastal Division in 2010. Ga Tech is reloading. UVA is beginning new this year and Duke is rising. Take a look at a couple programs rebuilding projects and compare to UNC.

Michigan: Rich Rod

2 years: 3-9 and 5-7, with him having to win <strike>big</strike>large in his 3rd year to keep his job. The talent level was Top 20 when he arrived and has remained there and he has been his own worst enemy. Adapt to what you have now and bring in your type of kids as you go! He has run off several high profile players and changed things too fast at Ann Arbor. He can coach(Guy know offense) and can build programs( see WVa) but this wasn't a rebuilding project. He needed to fix the offense and keep the defensive tradition going. If he gets it going look out, He needs to win games, but really needs to beat OSU now!

Clemson: Dabo Swinney

1 year*: 9-5 and ACC Championship game appearance. He took over for Tommy Bowden halfway into the season and was 4-3 with bowl game appearance. The team he took over was Top 10 talent and preseason uber-hyped. His first year was very good, with some small chips here and there. Tommy built this program and it was far from a wreck when he took the helm. He has recruited very well and seems to be doing a fine job. I would wait about 2 more years before claiming him a success or failure. Noteworthy: Dabo is changing the recruiting focus to less North Carolina, Kentucky and Virginia and more Georgia and Florida and Southern States. I can see how and why one would do this, recruits a plenty in all. Dabo might however want to remember one thing: The Mid-Atlantic has been very good to Clemson football never forget your roots. Tommy knew this and its one thing Dabo might want to keep. Could be the thing that vaults his program or ruins it.

NCSU: Tom Obrien

3 years: 5-7, 6-7 and 5-7. According to most people blue and red, TOB took over a program that lacked control under Chucky the Clown see above. The program didnt lack funding (thanks to red shoes) or talent(see Alan Micheal-Cash, Russell Wilson, Toney Baker, Jamelle Eugene, etc, etc, etc. Amato might have been a loose cannon but he could recruit talent. TOB has cleaned up the streets and recruited well and the right kind of kids(maybe). He seems to be safe in his job even with a an overall losing record and no winning seasons(3-0 versus UNC equals job security). Next year will be huge to him and NCSU. Will they break out or break down? Either way he gets at least 2 years to figure it out, I give the wolfpack fans and shootcallers alot of credit, they give you time to success or fail.

DUKE: David Cutcliffe

2 years: 4-8 and 5-7. Not much to say here. Duke has won 9 games in 2 years!!! Ted Roof didnt win 9 games in 4 plus years. Fred Goldsmith won 9 games in 2 years in 1994 to 1995. The guy can coach and recruit well. He like Coach Davis had a major rebuild project in front of him and he like Butch is ahead of schedule. Of course its Duke so I hope he fails but I see nothing but better days for this guy and school(dammit). He already was offered the UT job, Dont read what people say about talking only, if UT would have taken his assisants he was gone. Duke should consider this the golden years how they treat football today.

UNC: Butch Davis

3 years: 4-8, 8-5 and 8-5. You know most of this story. John Bunting, good man, loves UNC, Beats NCSU, loses players like they have a expiration date. Take NCSU and Duke stories and combine them and you have UNC football before Butch in the middle. BMFD turned UNC in his second year and is building nicely. He has recruited very well. He has done such a good job, some would argue he has underachieved(0-3 vs. NCSU and UVA). 3 years ago UNC was a joke of a football program and now we underachieve. My exceptations are always going to be too high, but most people can agree with me. UNC should do well.

So NCSU fan: Do Heather Dinich, UNC fans , Duke fans and other rivals a favor. SHUT THE HELL UP!!! Its spring football and everyone is excited about thier programs. Any talk today about UNC football for pure excitement! We have no way of knowing what will happen this year or any year. If you asked me last year, I would have told you that NCSU was going to be 8-5 or even 9-4. Let us just enjoy the hype for one hour please!!!

Finally, its football season!

After the final nail was put into the basketball season by <strike>powerhouse </strike>head-above-water Georgia Tech. We can finally look forward to football season. Spring game is little over a month away. Lots of questions to be asked and a one or two might get answered this early.

1) Will TJ Yates remain the set in stone starter for fall camp or will B. Hanson or <strike>Paulus </strike>Renner unseat him for primary fall reps? You win the job in the spring and prepare in the fall or that's the way it should be. LEAD PIPE LOCK: If TJ comes in with a heartbeat, he will remain the starter. Renner is playing baseball currently. Keep an eye out for Renner to run some first team.

2) Will more depth be found or lost? Spring practice is a time to see if the guy that been in the program 2 years has finally go it(insert highly touted wr, db, lb, dl, etc) Spring Practice is a time to also weed out guys that dont have it or don't want to work for it( insert highly touted wr,db, lb, dl,etc) Dead weight was cut after the bowl game and more could follow . Don't look right after the end of spring but keep an eye out for summer time( Idle hands is the devils playground time!!!) Players sometimes forget that they are in college and there are rules: see Oregon, South Carolina, UGA or everyone else!!! Carolina guys wait a little later about mid May or June to show the world that they can act like asses too! I would expect one or two underage drinkings and at least 2 fights. Maybe this year we can keep it between rival players and not teammates and lady friends(rumored).

If 2011 recruiting is an indicator of things to come we are going to have a <strike>good</strike>great year. We have 2 more recruits so far this year than we had almost til August last year! Butch has sent a letter out and that means? Something! Dare a I say...This is a must year or after the year Roy just had, we might be on the down side of UNC sports right now. Oh hell! Where is the Oxycontin?

I have loved the tarheels since I was 3 years old, but something has to be done about this year. First, marcus ginyard has to go. He is the main cause of the way the tarheels are playing. Secondly, Drew sucks. Strickland needs to start at the point. Third, Deon Thompson is making me mad. As big as he is, he plays so weak. Man up Deon. Last but not least is Roy Williams. I know he wants to play his seniors but enough is enough. If their not cutting it you need to switch the lineup.

Barnes, a native of Ames, Iowa, chose North Carolina for Basketball. He is currently a senior in high school.
Patience with this group

Adam Lucas wrote a nice article after the Albany game about Williams frustrations with this team. Check it out on the school's website. The upshot is that this is a wonderfully talented group that has yet to jell as a team.

They'll get it eventually - the question is when and how painful will the process be to watch. They will likely lose some games they should win. They will likely not get past the Sweet 16 this year. Don't be spoiled though. These guys are immensely talented and this will be a successful year building to a wonderfully successful year next year.

Enjoy the ride.

Can the Meineke Bowl Help Change CFB?

The Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte, NC has a great match up—at least as far as the organizers are concerned—with a ranked team and Big East runner up No. 17 Pittsburgh (9-3) facing regional fan favorite from the ACC, North Carolina (8-4).

More importantly the host city—Charlotte, NC—has an opportunity to change College Football. More on that later, first let’s preview the bowl.

ACC Preview: UNC

Carolina preview, short and sweet. Not one of those indepth articles, so it is quick and easy to read. I like the predicted record and tend to agree, but a lot has to come together for that to happen.

I am not one of those people who think the wide receiver position is a real problem because they still have talented players. Carolina needs a running game more than a passing game. Quan will have a big year on defense. Marvin Austin will too.

WVU best for Big East nationally?

If the powers that run the Big East could choose the order of finish in the conference for football, how would the eight schools fall out?

Would West Virginia be on top or what about Louisville, Rutgers, maybe even Syracuse? And why? This answers the question and WVU fans are probably going to like it, at least one would think so. UConn fans may take issue with the take here in this bit.

UNC working through WR issues

With so many great wide receivers gone from Carolina, are the Tar Heels prepared to handle life without Nicks, Tate and Foster? And if so, who will be their go to guys at wideout? Names like Mason, Little, Jones, Boyd and Harrellson have been tossed around, but they say why not Zach Pianalto?

Here is a link to this bit about Carolina WR situation, which it needs to step up right away or fans will be disappointed.

http://bustersports.com/podcast/acc-news/2009/08/27/unc-must-fill-void-at-wideout/

Expectations for 2009-10

The Heels have had some very good success in recent years culminating in another national championship. It seems like every time they reach the pinnacle, the roster is depleted and in effect they go into another rebuilding mode. Fortunately, the drop off has not been very significant but when you are at the top, even a slight fall can be very difficult to deal with for this prestigious program.

What are your opinions/expectations for the coming basketball season? Personally, I don't think it going to be all that bad although I'm certainly not expecting a repeat performance of last season. One of the reasons why I was so ecstatic when Roy Williams decided the time was right to come back to Carolina is because I knew the program would remain very solid for years to come mainly due to his staff's recruiting abilities. Not that his predecessor did a bad job. Doherty basically handed him the 2005 championship squad but I think it took Roy to get them hungry and motivated enough to actually get the job done. By the time that team was purged of future NBA busts (Mays, Williams) and potentially solid ballers (Felton, McCants), Roy had already successfully recruited Hansbrough and Danny Green, the first building blocks of his next championship team. Adding Lawson and Ellington a year later certainly helped the cause. Now that these guys are trying their hand in the NBA, who is going to step up and become the next potential NBA stars?

I'm stoked that we'll have Marcus Ginyard back for one more season especially because of how young this team is going to be. He's been there and done that and will be a great leader for the youngsters to rally around. Larry Drew has shown some flashes of brilliance but has some pretty big shoes to fill. Watching Henson in the McDonalds game brought a smile to my face as well. Zeller's size could be a big asset and the towering twins should only add to that dimension of this team. In my opinion, the inside combination of Ed Davis (my nickname for him is Lil' Smooth) and Deon Thompson may be the key that determines whether we continue to compete for another ACC championship and high NCAA tournament seed or have a tough climb back to the top. It is going to take the right mixture of veteran leadership and young talent to get us back to the promised land. I'm banking on the next 2-3 years after 2009-10 to be when the Tar Heels will be talked about regularly again not as national champion hopefuls but as contenders. This also assumes that nobody leaves early for the NBA after next season. Either way, it should be yet another entertaining year of Carolina basketball.

Denver Fans very excited to have Ty Lawson

Hello Carolina March readers,

I write for SB Nation's Nuggets blog: Pickaxe and Roll.

Can't tell you guys how excited we are to add him to our team. A 16.6 ppg scorer who really got hot in the NCAA tournament and averaged 20+ ppg. And with George Karl (obviously a Carolina alum) coaching the team I think Lawson has a great shot to get on the floor this year and contribute some meaningful minutes ... Karl is infamous for benching rookies, but he sounds pumped to have Ty.

If you guys have any insight or stories on Lawson you'd be willing to share over on Pickaxe my readers would love to hear them!

Good luck next season ... can't wait to see the next crop of Tar Heels Roy Williams brings in.

Atlanta Falcons Fan Seeks Garrett Reynolds Scouting Report

Falcons fan seeking right tackle of the future. Needs to be tall, strong, and capable of ripping a defensive end's arms off. Terrifying grimace a plus.

Is that a reasonable expectation for Garrett Reynolds? I'm trying to put together a scouting report on Reynolds, who should be in the mix for a job pretty early for a fifth round pick. Many scouts have noted that he looks like he'll have a spot of trouble against the pass rush, and I'm wondering if your expectations are the same.

Thanks for the help!

John Henson checks in with his online diary of coming to NY on www.slamonline.com

Some things I learned:

-He's not sure if he took a bus to NY in 7th grade

-He's gonna be more like Brandan Wright than Sean May

-There is abolutely no way he plays out his whole career at UNC, he will be 100% rented till whenever the NBA comes a calling
