Heels To Win the ACC?

UNC Tar Heels 2009

Record: 8-5

Highest/Final Ranking: 18/unranked

Bowl: Meineke Car Care Bowl, lost 19-17

Ever since Butch Davis was hired to coach the North Carolina football team, the program's recruiting and overall record have made very noticeable progressions. The team has strung together back to back 8 win seasons, the first time that has happened since 1997-98. Known more for its basketball than football, UNC looks this year to crack the top 10 in the AP Rankings and conquer the ACC. At NextGen Sports we see the Tar Heels winning the ACC Coastal division in 2010, a bold prediction considering they will have to compete with the likes of Georgia Tech, Miami, and Virginia Tech to do just that.

The Tar Heel's defense is it's greatest strength, and will most likely rank among the best in the nation. Their defensive line is arguably the prize piece, consisting of two future NFL first rounders in end Robert Quinn and tackle Marvin Austin. Quinn, standing at 6'5" and weighing 260 pounds, is built like an elite pass rusher and plays the part as well. The junior, who posted 11 sacks and 6 forced fumbles, proved to be as disruptive to opposing offenses as any other player in the country. NFL scouts are already looking at Quinn as a potential top five selection in next year's draft. The 300 pound Marvin Austin is a hulking presence in the middle of the defensive line. He is unusually quick for a big guy, and can get off blocks with great speed to either sack the quarterback or stuff the run. If Austin can build off his successful junior campaign he should be without a doubt one of the premier interior lineman in all of college football.

The future NFL talents for the Tar Heels' defense don't just end on its front line. Senior linebackers Bruce Carter and Quan Sturdivant are both seen as preseason All-Americans, and with very good reason. They are explosive, fast, and physical athletes who also have innate abilities to get to the football. Sturdivant, specifically, is the vocal leader of the defense and one of the country's most versatile outside linebackers; being able to pressure the quarterback, stop the run, and drop back in coverage. The Heels' secondary is loaded with experience and talent, featuring All-ACC selections safety Deunta Williams and corner back Kendric Burney (right). Williams and Burney, paired with their fellow seniors, cornerback Charles Brown and strong safety Da'Norris Searcy, form one of the best secondaries in the college ranks.

The ACC needs to think outside the box and expand to 18 teams including Notre Dame

Some how, any how, the ACC has some advantages that need to be
capitalized on. First, we know Notre Dame has a very long standing
grudge against the Big Ten over alleged slights that may have been
made regarding the religious nature of the school. Plus, they may
know that the megaconference expansion is only on break before the
next round gets started.

Swofford needs to get on the airplane up to South Bend and pitch the
following:

1. The ACC will go to an 18 team format with two divisions. The ACC
North would be ND, BC, Army, Navy, Pitt, UConn, Rutgers, VT and
Maryland. ND has had long standing football series with Army, Navy,
Pitt and UConn plus there is the basketball side of things. So they
would only be adding a VT and Maryland to their schedule and they can
keep playing USC, Michigan, Purdue and Indiana if they want to. I
know people are going to hate the idea of VT not being with the rest of
the old ACC but this seems like a good dividing line although some are
going to bitch and scream.

The ACC South would be everyone else currently in the conference not
named VT, BC or Maryland.

2. Let Notre Dame start their own ND network (maybe a joint venture
with NBC) and keep the revenues minus opponent fees for games on
the new NDN. The rest of the ACC can start their own separate TV and
radio network.

3. The championship game is going to cover a heck of a lot of territory
but play the game in neutral site like Charlotte. I think it would draw
well.

4. The 9 team divisions are perfect for putting together a football
schedule (8 conference games plus 3 or 4 OOC games) but it also
allows the divisions to go back to home and home scheduling of the
basketball teams. This will make Tobacco Road happy. Also, there
could be a ACC North versus ACC South tournament (like the ACC-Big
10 challenge) every year to kickoff the regular season.

5. The addition of the service academies will be a major plus. First,
both Army and Navy may get killed in football but they have huge
national followings in the Armed Forces. My dad who was enlisted
navy, loves Navy football even though he eventually went to college at
Illinois. He never misses a game. Many, many active and retired
armed forces personnel feel the same especially in the Washington DC
Metro area. If you doubt this, go look at the merchanise sales for the
Naval Academy and USMA.

It's also a public relations coup in that I think the public will appreciate
these two traditional schools being cared for by the conference. Not to
mention that they are long time opponents of ND which would make
them attractive as well.

6. Army, Navy, ND and Rutgers have great academic reputations.
UConn and Pitt won't hurt.

Why will this work? Because the ACC is not doing well in comparison
to the other conferences in performance and TV revenue. IThe plan is
good for football and basketball. Let the SEC or Big 10 deal with WV
and maybe Syracuse. I don't have time for either.

This will give the ACC a superconference for football and basketball that
can demand top dollar from a number of networks. Notre Dame will pull
an unequal share but if that's what it takes them to get them to join
then the ACC should do it. They are the linchpin for the whole plan.

If the ACC wants to bust this thing open, get Notre Dame and go to 18
teams. Sometimes crazy does work.

WHY RIVALS NEED TO SHUT UP SOMETIMES!!!!!

F120645_medium

via vmedia.rivals.com

I took notice recently of Heather Dinich's  ACC blog on Espn.com and a question stood out to me. WHY SHOULD UNC FANS HAVE HIGH EXPECTATIONS?  It was from a guy in RaleighMoo-town(No bias of course!!!) about why she was pushing UNC for high expectations. The poster used that idea that UNC was returning the majority of its players from last year as the reason why you shouldn't be excited about 2010.  Pointing to the Top 10 defense that gave up 4 touchdowns to NC STATE (Shocker there!!!) and the lack of production at times on the offense.

This is why rival  should shut up sometimes.

Finally, its football season!

Mad Tarheel Fan

I have loved the tarheels since I was 3 years old, but something has to be done about this year.  First, marcus ginyard has to go.  He is the main cause of the way the tarheels are playing.  Secondly, Drew sucks.  Strickland needs to start at the point.  Third, Deon Thompson is making me mad. As big as he is, he plays so weak.  Man up Deon.  Last  but not least is Roy Williams.  I know he wants to play his seniors but enough is enough.  If their not cutting it you need to switch the lineup.

Down With Duke!

Greetings, North Carolina Tar Heels fans:

Fear not, for today I come in peace.

Please see the below link to a couple of posts we have over at the Georgetown blog CasualHoya.com on everyone's favorite coach, Coach K, and on everyone's favorite program, Duke.  I'm sure that for this go-around, both Georgetown and UNC can find some common ground!

Is Duke Really Squeaky Clean?

Nice win against the Wolfpack last night.

Patience with this group

Adam Lucas wrote a nice article after the Albany game about Williams frustrations with this team.  Check it out on the school's website.  The upshot is that this is a wonderfully talented group that has yet to jell as a team.

They'll get it eventually - the question is when and how painful will the process be to watch.  They will likely lose some games they should win.  They will likely not get past the Sweet 16 this year.  Don't be spoiled though.  These guys are immensely talented and this will be a successful year building to a wonderfully successful year next year.

Enjoy the ride.
