Duke 85, UNC 84, Carolina Fans Everywhere Left Really Confused

Seriously, what just happened?

That hurt.

No, I understate things. That hurt a lot. Indescribably so. It will scar me, and I was just innocently watching from the comfort of my couch. I can't imagine what the anguish is for those who actually played. UNC did everything right for most of the game. They fell behind early to a barrage of scoring from Austin Rivers, but switched the defense up, putting Reggie Bullock on him instead of Harrison Barnes, and then clawed their way back. Duke was completely shut down for the last five minutes of the first half, and the Heels extended that into the second. Within a few minutes, UNC was up by ten and in complete control.

And then things just... stagnated. UNC didn't play particularly poorly, and Duke didn't play particularly well, but the lead just kind of stuck around ten. Tyler Zeller went out with four fouls, but the offense didn't really sputter; Harrison Barnes, after a frustrating first half kicked it into high gear and... the lead remained around ten. Rivers got a second wind, and the lead remained around ten.

Then the last three minutes happened.

Duke was still doing everything wrong at this point. They give it to Kelly for a three, but he's exhausted; it doesn't even reach the rim. But John Henson is deemed to have blocked it, and it's Duke ball. Tyler Thornton (!) makes a three. UNC timeout, seven point game Mason Plumlee gets a steal at half court on the next possession and the ball finds its way to a traveling Seth Curry. Another three, and it's a four point game. Harrison Barnes drives on the other end, stumbles after contact with Thornton, and is whistled with the charge.

Duke again elects to give Ryan Kelly another three-point attempt. He misses, of course. But the rebound finds its way back to Kelly, and even he can hit a baseline jumper. Suddenly, it's 82-80. Mason Plumlee immediately fouls Tyler Zeller. Zeller makes one of two free throws. 83-80.

Duke decides to give Ryan Kelly a third crack at a three pointer. It is again, way, way off. But in going for the rebound, Tyler Zeller tips it into the basket. All of basketball is confused, and it's a one-point game. But Tyler Zeller is fouled immediately. Tyler Zeller is a 79% free throw shooter. Tyler Zeller has already missed three of his nine free throws tonight. The team as a whole has missed 8 of 24, many of them front ends of one-and-ones. Tyler Zeller only makes one of his last two.

But it's a two point game, and Duke is bringing the ball up. Duke hasn't really done much to move the ball around. The only have eight assists on the entire night. And the defense is strong. The Blue Devils can't get near the three-point line. They're forced to call a timeout.

Out of the timeout, Duke still has nothing. Dawkins isn't open. Curry isn't open. Rivers gets a half-hearted screen from Mason Plumlee... and Reggie Bullock doesn't go through it. Bullock is now defending Plumlee, who's gotten maybe one entry pass all evening, and not from Rivers, who won't give it up unless forced. Rivers is being guarded by Zeller. Rivers doesn't make a move. Rivers doesn't look to pass. Rivers jacks up a three over a seven-footer from a step or two behind the arc.

And the fucking thing goes in.

It's a horrible, freakish, epic collapse. We're all sentenced to see it replayed for the rest of our lives, during every Carolina game. It obliterates what had been a very good game for Carolina, played at the head-whipping tempo they like. Kendall Marshall's terrific game – man is it fun to drive into a lane filled with Plumlees – with its 14 points and 8 assists is moot. Barnes' terrific second half, where after being held almost scoreless in the first he would finish with 25 points, is wiped away. Double-doubles from both Zeller and Henson are forgotten. Because of those last few minutes.

It didn't register as a collapse at the time. It was nothing like, say, Georgetown in 2007, which haunts me to this day. It was a death by a thousand cuts, a steady trickle of missed free throws and plays unfinished. The anger is just now setting in as I type, a good half-hour after the game. This whole thing is a travesty.

My one hope is the knowledge that the players have to be hurt infinitely more by this. That it has to just eat at them. The Florida State loss was an embarrassment, but shame can only motivate you so much. To lose like this, at home, in so painful a manner, to watch Austin Rivers run down the court celebrating, only to realize he was running away from the only group of people out of 20,000 who didn't want to punch him in the throat – that hurts. That festers. That is the kind of loss that burns the resolve to never lose again into a team. This is the sort of thing that forges a team, and spurs them on to leave destruction in their wake the rest of the way.

Or so I hope. Because I can't take any more losses like this.

I feel sick to my stomach… Zeller tipping the opponents shot in, Curry deciding to tuck and run before hitting a three (and the refs giving him the shot), Zeller missing the clutch free throws, Bullock not guarding Rivers at the end of the game…..

We realy missed Strickland tonight also where has Hariston been? He hasn’t been hitting any threes lately.

Duke Shot Better Twos Than Threes

You forgot that Ryan Kelly (1-7) and Tyler Thornton (1-6) were also out there chucking up threes, and once Rivers was guarded by Bullock, he was virtually scoreless for most of the game. Like I said, if you’d told me Duke’s comeback attempt would include three Ryan Kelly three-point attempts, I would have left to celebrate on Franklin St. then and there.

I think the worst thing wasn't that Duke kept taking 3's, but that UNC kept giving Duke clean looks at 3 to open the game

I can’t count how many open 3 attempts they gave up in the 1st half. Didn’t even chase their guys off the line at all. Just let them spot up and shoot. All their 3’s weren’t falling, but they were letting guys like Curry, Rivers, and Dawkins get some rhythm and that carried over the rest of the game. They weren’t making their 3’s, but they at least had the confidence to keep shooting them.

just because you are completley wrong about one thing, austin rivers scored 13 points while reggie bullock was guarding him…so yea

That’s one of those facts that’s less revealing the more you think about it, though. UNC only has the first meeting in Chapel Hill every other year, so it’s just the seventh loss.

Now when you consider those seven teams include the last Bill Guthridge team, the worst Matt Doherty team, the first Roy Williams team, and the two teams that immediately followed championships (including the worst Roy Williams team), most of those losses seem reasonable. Really it’s only the 2008 loss and last night’s that were unexpected. Just one of those fluke streaks that happens once in a while.

I'm just glad that the next game with Duke is at Carolina because those refs at Cameron Indoor were horrible!!

Oh….wait…..the game was at UNC? I’m not blaming the refs…..but they were absolutely terrible. Anytime a jump shooting road team is in the double bonus with like 10 minutes left in the game…..that says something.

Just a terrible collapse by UNC. Nobody looked like they wanted to step up at the end of the game and do anything. Where was Marshall the last 2 minutes? Why didn’t he have the ball in his hands? Really missing Strickland with McDonald out and then Hairston not hitting shots. The team needs more than 3 or 4 guys scoring in order to win big games.

Marshall had the rock and committed a horrible TO late in the game

He played well the majority of the game, but down the stretch he and his teammates were shook. They looked legitimately embarrassed at the end of the game. They should be embarrassed and I like the fact they they were. This team lacks fire. For one of the few times this season, the entire team played with passion. Its unfortunate that passion will be forgotten by most because they choked.

Something like every offensive trip down the court for Duke from the 15-minute mark to the 5-minute included a UNC foul.

by T.H. on Feb 9, 2012 9:05 AM EST up reply actions

^ This

I would have understood if it was a team that drove to the basket and attacked constantly. But Duke’s a jump shooting team and a lot of the fouls they called were pretty bad.

I’m not blaming the refs, Carolina choked on their own good enough, but the refs certainly changed the pace and complexion of that game.

agree

could not believe the way duke got to the line that stretch of time, just complete bailouts from otherwise good defense. kept them within striking distance.

you gotta hope Rivers’ ego gets so big now that the team continues to implode.

Go Heels!

Agree completely on Rivers

You can tell he wants nothing to do with whatever Coach K is selling. He just wants to use the name on the front of the jersey to promote the most important thing to him, the name on the back of the jersey. He was lucky to have made as many shots as he did. His shot selection was terrible and he just kept shooting and shooting, not really caring what anybody else on the team was doing. (although I guess it wouldn’t hurt to have 1 guy like that every once in awhile, seeing how our guys were so shell shocked that they couldn’t even put together a decent possession at the end of the game)

New Here...

This blows so much. But the way I see it, this does two things.
1) Proves dook needs make 14 3’s to beat a very good opponent. What are the chances this happens in the rematch? Barnes obviously was bothered by ankle injury but was good after getting it warmed up. I can’t wait for him and UNC to beat the SHIT out of dook at cameron. And you’re right, UNC will probably not lose anymore games in the regular season/ACC tourney (Not saying anything about NCAA performance just yet).
2) This loss pretty much guarantees UNC will get a 2 seed in the tournie, and not a 1 (will be UK, Cuse, OSU, and either KU/Missouri). But that works out for us! You maybe be wondering why… The thing is, if UNC was a 1-seed they would be behind UK, Cuse, and probably KU/Missouri. Because the committee places top teams geographically, Cuse would be in Boston, KU/Missouri in St Louis and UK in Atlanta. This leaves Phoenix. I’m not sure about you, but I sure as HELL don’t want UNC in Phoenix. I rather have them be a 2 seed in Atlanta against UK, where our fans can go see them and root them on (plus with the ACC tournie there, UNC will be used to the building/floor/lighting). Now I know if UK ends up being a the 1st 1-seed, UNC would be the 4th 2-seed. I’m willing to bet UK will trip up at some point and fall behind KU and Cuse, making UNC-UK in Atlanta all the more possible and likely. I know we rather play UK in the FF, but I don’t want UNC out all the way in Phoenix playing god knows who.

Sorry this was so f’ing long, but I needed to get some anxiety out without turning to drinking (have to wake up at 6 :(! )

I look forward to more of your posts and look forward to being a member of this community!

Will this team ever develop a killer instinct?

Is it something you can develop? I thought maybe this team was developing an edge. Henson’s dunk against Maryland. Reggie Bullock standing over Rivers. But it’s false bravado. This isn’t about being seen as better, it’s about being better. I’m not sure this team has it in them. I think they worry too much about perception and not enough about reality in certain moments. This isn’t a great team, yet, but they’re acting like it is.

If something can change that, it’s a loss like this. In 22 days, we’ll see how much they’ve learned.

ugh

this was the worst sports watching experience of my life. we had it the whole time. if this doesnt motivate them to beat the shit out of virginia, i dont even know anymore. Im in shock right now.

by jwex50 on Feb 9, 2012 12:33 AM EST reply actions

im so fuckin

Pissed right now!! This team has no killer instinct at all. The Virginia game is going to determine the direction of the season. It’s going to be really tough and I wouldnt be suprised if we lose. In my opinion this is a look of a sweet 16 team and that’s it. Once again Roy gets out coached by coach K. This Duke team is not good at all, but of course we lose. SMH.

by feardaspear on Feb 9, 2012 1:43 AM EST via mobile reply actions

I've calmed down a little bit. This loss (and the FSU one)

Will either be a great learning experience on the way to a title run. Or this is a team that is NOT as good as they think they are and lacks killer instinct.

by Zanzabar on Feb 9, 2012 9:41 AM EST reply actions

Roy's time outs

Perhaps this is a horse that has been beaten to death over the years, but I put a lot of blame on Roy’s game management. Things started falling apart after UNC’s time out with around 4 minutes left. The point spread was still around 10 and the clock was winding down just fine, we had possession, there wasn’t pressure, we’d been shooting well….and Roy calls a time out. Game starts, ball inbounded, stolen, Duke scores, Duke closes the distance enough to kill us at the last second. Yes, the team deserves responsibility for what happened, but that unnecessary and momentum-killing TO felt bad when Roy called it and worse after play resumed.

Roy’s substitutions and player assignments were good, and for about 35 minutes of the game I liked our play. I just wish any other coach had full control of the timeouts.

zeller needed one to shoot free throws

those two free throws Z missed together: he was totally gassed at the line. i’ve watched him for four years, he is in outstanding condition, but even superman gets gassed at times. use at TO to give the kid a break on the bench, tell a funny story and let him go out and knock them down.

This sums it up for me
And the fucking thing goes in.

We're here to win football games. The way to do that is to tell him and to get on him at the right times. I do that when you guys (media) don't see and watch.''

What else makes a strong leader?

Harrison

Is it just me or every time Harrison loses to Duke I can’t help but thinking the look on his face says he wishes he was playing for the other side.

Then he is the main reason for the lack of a killer instinct

He should start looking like it bothers him more…He looks more envious than angry. He needs to show his team he will not stand for it anymore.

I dont blame our players, the did a damn good job. I do blame Roy, 10-12sec.Why not play full court press, and foul. We would’ve got th ball back with about 6-8sec.BAD COACHING DECISION
