Around SBN: Two Minutes Of Thunder Basketball Wins The Game

UNC 89, Florida State 69

I f you were to design a game plan around humiliating Larry Drew – something Roy Williams, of course, would never do – you couldn't do much better than UNC did today. Faced with a fearsome interior defense, the Heels mercilessly picked it apart, driving to the basket seemingly at will and hitting the perimeter shots when the defense collapsed. And they did it all under the direction of Kendall Marshall, who had the game of his career. On the court for 36 minutes, Marshall would finish with nine points and an incredible 16 assists, setting both the UNC records for assists by a freshman and for assists in a conference game. And he did all of this while turning the ball over only three times.

This all came against the second-ranked defense in the country, and Marshall and company made them look like fools. The most points the Seminoles had given up in a game was 73 in a 24-point blowout of UNCG; the Heels reached that at the 6:28 mark. Carolina took it straight to the defense and reaped the rewards, as every starter but Marshall scored in double figures and the team shot 54% from the field. Their perimeter game was outstanding, with Dexter Strickland, who had only five threes all season, knocking down a pair as part of his 15 points. Even when their shots didn't fall, UNC was still often pulling down the rebound – the team had eleven offensive boards. FSU was going to need an incredible offensive performance just to keep pace.

"Incredible offensive performance" isn't really in the Seminoles' vocabulary. Despite a decent shooting night, FSU was hampered by turnovers and a lack of rebounds. They played the majority of the first half with Chris Singleton on the bench with two fouls; he'd still finish as his team's leading scorer. UNC denied Florida State rebounds, hounded them into turnovers, and kept them demoralizing by pulling away every time the Seminoles got close. (Close in this context was seven points, the smallest margin FSU was able to achieve in the second half.)

It's a little too early to declare there's absolutely no downside to Larry Drew leaving the team. FSU, after all, is not the team you want to judge your defense against. But the team was relaxed, smiling, and playing incredibly well. Carolina now gets to take the ACC's longest winning streak into Cameron to face Duke. The way this team is playing under Marshall, they might just blow the doors off the place.

Impressive win

Broke our streak of 90 consecutive where the opponent shot 50% or less from the field. If Roy can keep your guys from drifting back to the AAU mindset, the Heels look to me like a legit Final-4 candidate.

That was a great basketball game. Had a feeling watching that game that I haven’t had since the championship winning team a few years ago. The guys seemed like they enjoyed playing together and really seemed relaxed. There was a little swagger to the team and a confidence that has been lacking. Nice to see them playing Carolina basketball again.

UNC-Duke matters yet again. One time on Wednesday night…Kendal Marshall leading the way. Let’s do this.

What a great game to watch!

I had to DVR it and started watching the game while the live game was in the second half. I was tempted to check out the score in the live game before I started watching, but I’m glad I didn’t.

Last season it hurt to watch the Heels play because they so clearly weren’t playing as a team. For me it was far worse than the worst of the Doherty years. It was the total opposite of what we’re seeing now. Probably the saddest part of all is that last years team had about as much talent as this years, but it was totally wasted.

This team is very young and I see so much potential, but I also still expect them to struggle at times. It’s the nature of a young team. I agree with GMac, it’s nice to see a Carolina team playing Carolina basketball again!!

Marshall was great, but I thought Strickland did great in handling the ball in his limited time at point

And I thought McDonald did a good job of helping him out acting as his two guard. McDonald showed he may be capable of being the emergency PG if we need to go to one. I expect we’ll see more three man rotation with those guys as Strickland gets more comfortable with playing the PG again. Great effort by the whole team.

I agree with your thoughts on Strickland

And I’m not sure if anyone else feels this way, but it almost seems like Strickland played with a chip on his shoulder. I think he really took the Drew thing personally and went out of his way with his tweets and then his play yesterday to show that it didn’t matter if Drew wasn’t there anymore. He seemed a lot more aggressive and confident with what he was doing. A few times this season he has just seemed hesitant or unsure what to do when he gets the ball. Yesterday he seemed ready to shoot, pass, or drive. And he didn’t hesitate while doing it. I love the fact that he shot some 3 pointers also. Again, not necessarily because I think he’s a great 3 point shooter, but because he was decisive and really tried to take some of the burden upon his shoulders. I like the prospect of him being our backup PG a lot more this year than last.

I think Strickland got too much criticism for his play at point last year

With the ball he’s faster than Felton, and I would like to see how close he comes to Lawson. My understanding is that he didn’t play the point in HS, but was asked to take on that role hear. He has good moves but it was clear that he’s used to doing that to set up his own shot. It’s a different story when you’re asked to dish it off. Also I think trying to learn last year with a team that didn’t play well together made it tougher for him. I would still prefer to see a true shooting guard at the 2 spot, and I don’t think Strickland is there yet, but I’d like to see him get 25 minutes between the two positions and continue to grow. I think he has tremendous potential with his speed and athleticism.
