More Reactions to Larry Drew's Departure
From my brief tour of the internet this afternoon, the reaction to Larry Drew's sudden departure pretty much breaks down into three groups. About 30% is confused, but just willing to let him go; another 20% is pretty irked at Drew, especially for the way this all went down. And the remaining 50%? They really dislike Larry Drew's parents.
This Inside Carolina article pretty much lays out all the criticisms of the Drew family, all attributed to "sources." The most bizarre story is the one that Sharon Drew called the basketball office in a fury in reaction to the news that John Wall had talked to Roy Williams. The more important tidbit, however, is that the basketball staff was scrambling last spring to keep their options open with point guard recruits, so sure were they that Drew was transferring at the end of the season. Observations that Drew was a reserved, distant teammate don't mean much, though. He and Justin Watts (EDIT: and Tyler Zeller, duh) are the only two players remaining from the championship team, and he's had a lot of contemporaries leave the team in the last year. I might be reserved, too. Still the fact that his teammates found out about his departure on Facebook, and seem to be less than broken-up doesn't speak particularly well about him.
My other favor "sources say" comment comes from Andy Katz, who has a source telling him that Iowa State is not interested in Drew. That's not as out of left field as you may think; Iowa State is recruiting Korie Lucious, recently of Michigan State, and have a couple of other transfers on their roster. This does bring up the question of where exactly Drew is headed. He won't be able to take the court until the fall of 2012, and I'm not sure how many teams will want him if he only has one season of eligibility. What are the odds of him going the Brandon Jennings route, and playing in Europe for a while to build up the skills for the NBA? I don't know enough about his situation to know whether he considers it an option. It might be the best option, for now.

good post
Nice job T.H…the Inside Carolina article is a great read. The parents are destroying these kids. They want them to go pro so bad that they’ll do ANYTHING, including ruining their kids self confidence and sense of reality, to do it. Remember at Duke when Coach K told William Avery and his parents he’s not ready to go pro? Avery’s parents went public ripping Coach K saying he doesn’t care about his player’s futures. Where’s Avery now?
The main point with this story for me is this…if this guy’s name was James Lonegan, would anyone care? If not for his dad, Drew II would be the back-up at Marist College, and nobody would care.
Glad he’s gone…any player that doesn’t want to be somewhere, should leave.
Zeller
Thanks for the rational take on this issue. One thing though, wasn’t Zeller on the championship team too?
You're Right
I don’t know why I keep leaving him off. He was injured most of the year, but burned his redshirt to come back and play in late February and March. You’d think that would sink in.
I've thought since last season that Larry Drew was not a good fit for Roy's offense
The guy doesn’t seem to be able to consistently play the up tempo game that Roy wants. I was quite surprised he didn’t transfer during the off season to a school with a more traditional half court offensive system. He has the potential to be able to excel in a system like that.
But I also thought the problem was far bigger than whether he had the skills to fit the offense. He didn’t seem to display the attitude of a good teammate. The word coming out that he wasn’t a locker room cancer, but just stand-offish pretty much confirms my suspicions about him.
Nothing in this action reflects well on Drew II. It would take a shocking revelation to justify him doing this, and frankly, I don’t expect anything like that to come out.

I don't think he'll have to go overseas to play...
He will probably just have a chance to go to the Atlanta Hawks and be on their roster or something….seeing how he might have a connection there.
The timing is just what bothers me the most
but if it’s an “addition by subtraction thing”, then maybe this will be a good move for the rest of the way. Help bring this group of guys together even more.
