Tar Heels vs Yellow Jackets boxscore

A team depends on its starters. They set the tenor of the game from the opening tip; they have a gameplan to execute, and they're the most talented players on the team. It's their job to be prepared from the moment the whistle blows. Sure, occasionally you'll need a bench player to bail them out when the other team has their number, or the rhythm is off and they need a moment to regroup. But for the most part, these are the guys you win the game with.

For the second straight game, the entire UNC starting lineup was pulled before the first TV timeout.

It only went downhill from there. After Kendal Marshall led the second team back from an 8-1 deficit to tie it 10 apiece, the starters came right back and dug another ten point hole. At the half, the starting five had scored a total of 16 points – the same total Iman Shumpert had managed on his own.

But there's the second half, right? UNC has recovered from their last two slow starts, refocusing on defense and slowly clawing their way back while their opponents exhaust themselves. Not this time. Carolina came out just as discombobulated, with the starters turning a one-point halftime deficit into an immediate nine-point debacle. The Heels would never come closer than they did at halftime, and never led the entire game. This a team immensely more talented than the Yellow Jackets. They were simply outplayed, outhustled, outfought, and embarrassed.

Glen Rice, Jr. had a good game though, didn't he? 24 points, including 4 of 7 from behind the arc, when Leslie McDonald was the only other player on the court to hit more than a single three. Rice also had a pair of Tech's 13 (!) steals, and combined with Shumpert in the backcourt to almost outscore UNC's entire team. Freshman Daniel Miller impressed, outrebounding and generally manhandling Tyler Zeller, who was pretty much a non-factor for most of the game. Brian Oliver, despite a poor shooting night, also outrebounded every member of the Heels' frontcourt and generally wrested the ball away from Carolina at every opportunity.

I'm trying to think of something good to say about this team. The free throw shooting was better than usual – the team shot 75%, and even Henson was 5 of 8 – and the defensive traps at midcourt and their full press were well done, if undercut by UNC's abysmal offense. Other than that, everything was crap. Larry Drew, with his starting job challenged and his dad in the audience for a rare chance to see him, played like, well, he's been playing of late. Marshall was better, but still out of control, and had the game slip away from him with two straight turnovers right when UNC had their last chance to make a play for the game. Of course, it wouldn't have even been a problem if Carolina had made the eight layups and four tip-ins the team missed in the game. That's twenty-four points right there; if anyone has an explanation for how a team could shoot that badly from two feet away, I'd love to hear it.

I'm not sure there's a player on this team I didn't want to see benched at some point in this game. And I got my wish. Everybody was yanked at some point, and Roy Williams tried more variations on a lineup than I've seen all season, at one point playing both Marshall and Drew. Nothing helped. This was a disaster; the team now has an incredibly short turn around before defending the streak in Chapel Hill against Clemson. I see no evidence right now that this team won't flail just as badly again.

Overreaction. Roy `just needs to replace Drew with Marshall. It is extremely obvious that the team as a whole plays much much better with Marshall than Drew. There is really no excuse for what happened tonight. If Williams played the right starting five and kept Marshall in in the first half he would have never been in that situation in the second half. The starters consistently go outplayed in every way while the bench players consistently caught them back up. It really was embarrassing coaching to me. It really bothers me the sub the whole bench thing. If he just benched Drew, the starters would play better with him. Strickland would play so much better with Marshall feeding him on the fast break and Barnes has already displayed how having Marshall out there to help feed you easy baskets can help you avoid taking ill advised shots. Henson gets easy alley oops with Marshall. I just don’t understand what is going on with that. But there is no excuse for the lost today. I really hope the problem is fixed by next game.

I couldn't disagree more

Both point guards have played well at times this season, and both have played poorly. Thankfully, that’s often been independent of each other. More importantly, though -

neither point guard has the ability to magically make the shooting guards and wings hit their open shots, or have the post players hang onto an entry pass or rebound. 12 missed lay-ups or tip-ins?! That has nothing to do with the point guard (and arguably made both their stats look worse).

27% shooting by the entire team. There is no quick fix for that.

I don’t know how you can say that. Marshall can make poor passes and decisions but it seems to occur when he is in an almost no win situation. He came in at the end of this game with the need to erase a huge deficit so began to force passes that I believe he would not have made regularly. They also can influence shooting percentages, because whenever Drew is on the court he makes the safe, predictable pass and he makes it a little slower than Marshall. When Marshall hits a shooting guard they are usually more open and his passes are crisper which allows them more times to get set for their shot. How does that not influence their percentages. Everyone begins to force shots with Drew playing because he always makes the predictable play. This means that there are, surprisingly, less easy buckets to be had. When the offense isn’t running as well as it should it leads Barnes, among others, to shoot contested shots to try to create offense. You can see when Marshall is out there creating easy shots for people, no one becomes selfish because they become comfortable that there offensive plan will eventually get someone an open opportunity, whereas when Drew is in, it can create an obvious doubt.

With the way Roy insists on keeping the same starting lineup despite the obvious issues they've had

it makes me wonder about what he’s trying to accomplish. It makes me wonder if it’s really about winning the game, or him proving a point. I hope he thinks he’s doing what he needs to make this team better for the long haul, but I really don’t see it. I can’t see what he is trying to accomplish. And it makes me wonder if the team feels the same. No two ways about it this team was terrible last night. I always assume that what the team is feeling and going through is very different from the fans, but last night’s game makes me wonder. Are they as confused about what Roy is doing as we are?

I am so

sick and tired of this team underachieving. We just lost to one of the worst teams in the ACC and it wasnt even close. After a loss like that I think everybody needs to re evaluate themselves from the head coach all the way down the water boy. If we dont make the NCAA tournament this year I want Roy on the hot seat!!!!

I'm not sure what to think

This is…just odd. This team has great talent and absolutely has the ability to be a solid ranked team. Not a great team…but a team that goes down to a terrible GT squad and wins. Roy Williams is now starting to get people worried. How many times will he say “I need to do a better job coaching.” Well since that’s your ONLY job, you telling us that is an insult to our intelligence.

If this team doesn’t make the NCAA tournament it would be a huge failure. We have a solid group coming in next year, but we had arguably the best class this year. Marshall is the only freshman with any desire at all out there for 40 minutes. I don’t want to go completely crazy, we really do have a long way to go. But what we’ve seen so far is absolutely unacceptable.
