Women's Team Falls to Gonzaga, 82-76
In the end, an offensive spark wasn't enough. In a blazingly-fast game – the Heels had 87 possessions – UNC seemed to find their rebounding prowess and for stretches their shot, but the end couldn't overcome a barrage of four straight threes from Tiffanie Shives, as Gonzaga won to advance. UNC got some great play in the paint, as sophomore Chay Shegog had 19 points and 9 rebounds, while sophomore Laura Broomfield had 16 and 14, respectively.
The two teams combined for 23 steals, with Vandergroot nabbing five for the Bulldogs and DeGraffenreid and Broomfield getting four each for the Heels. The Heels were only 3 for the 8 in the final five minutes, however, turning the ball over twice and being outscored 13-7 as Gonzaga put the game away. The team only loses one senior who received significant playing time, however, returning all five starters next year however as well as Jessica Breland. They'll have one of the strongest frontcourts in the country and should contend for the championship.

The biggest "IF" with this team ...
… is if Lucas, DeGraffenreid, and White can step up and play 100 times more consistently than this season. The bigs all improved, while our backcourt struggled, particularly in both transition defense (look at all the 3s Gonzaga shot and made in the 2nd half) and in limiting turnovers in the break.
The upside of the frontline is evidenced already by the vast improvement they made from game 1 to now.
Can Hatchell get them all cohesive? We shall see …
