NIT Thread: Mississippi State
North Carolina Tar Heels at Mississippi St. Bulldogs, Mar 20, 2010 12:00 PM EDT
Here's the thing I find most fascinating about today's game. Mississippi State leads the nation in blocks per possession. (UNC, for the record, is 18th.) Now, a lot of that is Jarvis Varnado, 4th in the nation in that category. But the rest of the team also does pretty well, because they have enough tall guys to get out on the perimeter. But UNC rarely shoots from the perimeter, and State's tallest player (Varnado) is only 6'9", pretty small by UNC's standards. The Bulldogs also don't generate much in the way of turnovers, either. And the 3rd best shot-blocker in the country is Rutgers' Hamady Ndiaye; Carolina held him to only two blocks in limited play.
Mississippi States three-point shooting will be the other big thing. They'll attempt almost as many as William & Mary; a quick start from behind the arc and UNC will find themselves in a familiar hole, one they've had trouble digging out of. But mainly, I want to see Thompson and Zeller step up and contain Varnado. It's time they stepped up defensively.

3 Turnovers
In the first five possessions. If MSU could make some layups, the score would be worse than 7-2.
The Good Thing About the 3s
UNC is beginning to hand in their faces, and when they miss it’s all blue under the basket. Won’t help if the Heels don’t get some offense going on their end, though. Getting Varnado in foul trouble would help, too.
Every UNC Paint Player
Is being double and triple teamed as soon as he touches the ball. You can do that when the Heels can’t shoot and MSU is assured the rebound.
Henson's Early Season Time at the 3
Is helping here. He has the confidence to shoot over MSU or drive through the lane, while he’s better suited defensively for the four. And I’m never going to get tired of his dunks.
yo yo yo
The kid Vanardo is unreal, just a pogo stick blocking the ball.

Not at All
They’re in a groove, State’s too tired to hit threes, and after the first few possessions, UNC is just hoovering up the rebounds on the defensive end. This is the way they should have been playing all season.
we're doing a liveblog over at Block-C
with Chili and Willi Mac from the site formerly known as Danny Ford is God. Starts during tourney time if you’re intersted in stopping by.

I’m going to conduct the liveblog and basically talk smack at www.hobofuckparty.com

I Wouldn't Have Thought
Strickland would come out better off of a head-to-head collision with Varnado. But then again, I thought a brick wall would lose a collision with Varnado.
Graves has not grasped the zone defense concept
It’s frustrating.

NO SHIT
he hit a fucking three off the window? that is the most absurd thing I’ve ever seen.
Yeah BoYeeEEeeE
To Be Fair
It was a pretty iffy call. The refs have done that to both teams, blowing whistles on loose ball scrambles because someone hits the ground.
How bout them 16-16 Heels
Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I Tell You
That’s the least emotion I’ve ever seen from anyone going the full length of the court for a game-winning bucket in my life. I’ve shown more excitement just waiting up on a Tuesday.
