Salt in the Wounds

So not only was UNC knocked out in their first tournament game – second time Georgia Tech's done that to Roy Williams by the way – but they were the only lower seed not to advance. Miami, N.C. State, and talent-deprived Virginia all had better tournaments than the Heels. Don't expect that trend to continue, though. The bottom four seeds are 2-8 on Friday since the tournament expanded. N.C. State has had the greatest success, making it all the way to the finals as a ten seed in 2007.

The Wolfpack remain the only team to win three ACC tournament games and not be awarded the title, having done it twice,  both that season and in 1997, during the days of the Les Robinson Invitational. They're the most likely to advance today as well. Florida State, despite winning a lot down the stretch, has been playing slower and slower, and getting narrower and narrower in their victories. It's the last game of the night, they'll have had the longest time off, and they're ripe for the upset.

UNC will be back in Chapel Hill,of course, hoping for an NIT bid. If you need something to debate, here's Larry Drew's postgame quote, one of the few new criticisms of this team I've heard in some time:

"If I had to say something, I would probably say in certain situations Coach will call a set play and guys, I feel, are so caught up into carrying the play out that they're not really letting their basketball instincts take over."

Thoughts?

If I was a player, and Roy called a set play for me, I think I would try to run as it was drawn up. Right? I mean, it’s not like this is some rookie coach here. I don’t have to go thru his resume to know that Roy Williams knows what he is talking about or doing. Yes, to an extent your bball insticts have to take over, but you also have to trust the play that your coach draws up. I don’t know if what I said makes sense, but it made sense in my head…so I don’t know. Just very very frustrating year for Tar Heel fans all around.

Say What?

Unless the play Roy Williams “drew” up (I crack myself up) involves dribbling down the court and chucking a pass out of bounds to the cheerleaders, I doubt they’re concentrating too much on running the play correctly. And I certainly haven’t seen a lot of basketball instinct from this team, period.

Next year can’t come fast enough….

^^ Michael – I see you alot on BuffRumblings … glad to see you’re a UNC fan too. I grew up in WNY, did 2 years at UB but went to Carolina for undergrad/grad.

If this team was on the upswing, like the 03 team, an NIT berth would be perfect. I had a blast at those game (and the 5 or 10 dollar ticket didn’t hurt), but for this trainwreck of a team, I’d hope for everyone’s sake they just stay home.

Mr. Barnes, Bullock, and Marshall, COME ON DOWN!

yo godda be kiddn me

I have been a huge tarheel fan since the days of jordan, worthy, daugherty, and co. granted then i was about 8, but anyway. I have also coached the game, be it only at the high school level, coach williams is not to blame… It is one thing to have talent(which he does) it is another thing to have players willing to get rid of their egos and listen. this is the first team i have seen that just played soft all season. Everyone is correct in saying they had no leader on the floor this year but leaders come to the surface with effort and there was none of that. I hope coach williams makes all returning players watch film every day until next season starts. Reputation is nothing with out effort UNC teams have been great in the past because players focused on the CURRENT team and not what they did in highschool.. whole new ball game in the NCAA

this is also the first team at chapel hill that didn’t have a single perimeter shooter, makes them one dimensional and with all the bigs injured on the bench you got nothing. ED DAVIS…. PLEASE PLEASE STAY FOR ONE MORE YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!
