About the Haiti Comment

It didn't bother me in the least. For why, I defer to the overlords at the SB Nation blog:

What Williams DID NOT say: UNC's season is worse, or equal to what happened in Haiti, or that UNC's season is in any way comparable to Haiti, or that what happened in Haiti wasn't the most godawful thing ever, or that he's unsympathetic to the plight of the island. See, the massage therapist is the one who made the connection between the two, not Williams.

What Williams DID say: He thinks UNC's season has been a catastrophe, not merely a disappointment.

To quote Spencer Hall, my colleague here at SB Nation: "The offramp to Outrageland is the first place a writer will go, even if they have to jump the median to get there."

The whole point is that Williams is taking these losses unbelievably hard, and his perspective is a bit skewed. It's the kind of coach he is.

Yeah, I like seeing the talking heads express their outrage over Roy's comment

I don’t think an event or series of events in someone’s life has to be on anything like the scale of Haiti before someone is ALLOWED to use the word Catastrophe to describe it. The manufactured umbrage over Roy’s comment is the only part of this that should be even remotely offensive to any sane being.

Catastrophe

When I see this I think is these things:

1) why would he even say that. No one forced him to repeat that anecdote. Just seemed a bit out of touch and easily skewed to the negative.
2) he’s really at wits end in terms of his grips on the season. I heard a writer named Brett Jensen state that during Wednesday’s presser Roy just looked 10 years older. This season is wearing on him, he’s not nearly as aw-shucks-y and poetic when things aren’t going well.
3) Roy is lucky it was him that said that, I think we can all agree that without his folksiness, if he was oh I don’t know Coach K or Calipari or Calhoun he’d be getting roasted even harder.
