Can Carolina Beat Tennessee Without Anthony Elzy?

Anthony Elzy joined the long line of Tar Heel football players who have done something stupid this year, getting himself scrubbed from the bowl game after failing to meet his student-athlete obligations. Although there's a slim hope that Johnny White could recover from his broken collarbone in time, for the moment the depth chart consists of Shaun Draughn and hero of the Florida State game Hunter Furr. No matter how you spin it (Hey! Our second string averages 5.2 yards a carry!) this is a bad sign for the Heels.

The annoying thing is, Tennessee's run defense isn't that strong. Four teams put up 5+ yards a carry against the Volunteers this year, and while Draughn's done his time as a starter last season, he always had Ryan Houston to shoulder part of the load. It's possible he's got a great game left in him – he was one yard shy of his career high against East Carolina earlier this season – but it's not something I'd count on.

That leaves the passing game; the good news is that Tennessee isn't big on interceptions, managing only four on the season, and a full half of them against Louisiana-Lafeyette. They don't particularly give up a lot of deep passes, but UNC doesn't throw many of those, so it's a wash. T.J. Yates should be able to pick them apart with short passes to some extent, provided he gets enough time to throw. Tennessee has picked up on their sack total in the four-game winning streak that ended the season, which could give the Heels' never-strong offensive line trouble.

When Tennessee has the ball, things look better for the Heels. Tennessee has the worst rushing attack in the SEC, while UNC's defense has been strong against the run. Junior Tauren Poole gets the brunt of the carries, and he has similar numbers to Draughn; Carolina should be able to handle him without too much difficulty.

The Volunteers are more dangerous through the air, which is worrisome. They were fourth in the SEC in passing offense and have seven different players with touchdown receptions. UNC's been weak against the long pass, especially when the opposing quarterback has time to throw, as Virginia Tech ably demonstrated. The good news is Tennessee's offensive line won't buy quarterback Tyler Bray much time; they're the most sacked team in their conference. Bray, who's 4-0 since taking the starting job from Matt Simms, isn't much of a scrambler either, so expect the UNC defense, even without Bruce Carter, to go after him hard. When he does throw, he'll most often hit Denarius Moore and Gerald Jones; both are seniors and have a combined seven touchdowns in the last four games.

On special teams, UNC's big weakness this season, there's some hope. Tennessee doesn't do much at all with punt returns, and are only slightly better with kickoff returns Their punting is rather weak, and their field goal kicking solid, despite switching kickers midseason and then switching back.

The bottom line is, this a very winnable game for the Heels, against a good enough opponent to end the season on a high note. Losing Elzy hurts, just like losing Carter did, and Pianalto before that, along with everyone who exited the season early, stage agent-and-tutor. I think Carolina can pul it off, frankly, as Tennessee has been pretty aimless all year. Otherwise, it will be a third consecutive bowl loss for Butch Davis, and another example of the wasted promise of this season. Winning seems like a much more preferable option.

ULL?

Tennessee didn’t play Louisiana Lafayette, and has 17 interceptions on the season including 5 by CB Prentiss Waggoner and 4 by FS Janzen Jackson. Waggoner took 4 of his 5 INTs to the house, breaking Eric Berry’s single season record… amusingly that means a CB is ranked at #6 on Tennessee’s scoring chart.

I would also caution you about comparing Tauren Poole and Draughn. Poole has managed to break 100 yards in half the games this season, including 162 vs. Oregon, 117 vs. Alabama, and 109 at LSU. Draughn seems to be a short yardage guy, whereas Poole generally busts a couple a game but has difficulty getting consistent yardage. That being said, 5.2 YPC and 994 yards behind a line composed of 4 first year starters is nothing to sneeze at. Of course North Carolina seems to have a very good rushing defense, so I don’t expect much… but I wouldn’t be shocked if he busted a few good runs assuming his thigh is finally healthy.

Another point to bring up is the idea that Bray isn’t a scrambler… no he won’t beat you with his feet but he has a sixth sense for avoid pressure, it’s actually quite astounding at times. Matt Simms literally froze anytime there was any pressure, but Bray moves very well in the pocket. We’ve gone from allowing sacks on 13% of pass plays to a touch over 4% since Bray took over. Teams have been bringing the house all year long due to a relatively ineffective running game, and a weak offensive line… and for the teams that reach the QB it works fine, but if they don’t get to Bray then he can eat you alive. Justin Hunter is one of the best WRs I’ve ever seen at Tennessee; and this includes Robert Meachen, Donte Stallworth, Carl Pickens, Peerless Price, and more; cover him in man at your own risk.

I'll repeat a lot of what Caban said

Although I do disagree in some points.

The article was definitely mixed up, as we didn’t play ULL this year and have 4 INT return TDs this year—not 4 INTs. However, I believe Waggner only has 3 (though he did break Berry’s record), and I know that everyone always puts an extra “o” in his name. It’s just Waggner.

Poole had some good games early on, but late in the season, he’s been struggling to get anything in the first half. Which is strange, because he suddenly has a passing game to take the pressure off. But he has been getting good yardage in the 4 minute offense at the end.

Bray really has turned things around, and evades the rush well, and we have several WRs who can hurt you. Denarius Moore still drops too many passes, but he’s quite the deep threat and has had two 200 yard games this year. Gerald Jones will catch every 3rd down pass thrown his way, and Justin Hunter and Da’Rick Rogers both have the potential to be NFL first-rounders, although both are freshmen and still only get backup minutes. They’re both quite inconsistent, but Hunter especially has big play potential.

Also, on the punting game, look at how many muffs or return fumbles we’ve had this season. I think it’s six. Or more.

Crap.

I bet that portion applies to Mississippi State; I had both open when I was writing this as well as doing fifteen things at once. I’ll fix it when I can get to a real computer. It doesn’t change the overall analysis much; T.J. Yates hasn’t thrown many interceptions this season because he doesn’t often throw deep. Short passes under the defense to the tight ends are usually the order of the day.

Jeez Louise

I nearly fell over when I read this article, but I felt much better when I
I read the preceding comments.
Thanks, Caban and Incipient Senescence…

Regarding the game, this will be the best team that Bray has started against (Bray played a lot at South Carolina but didn’t start). As much attention as TJ and Bray are getting, the respective running games in the second half may decide this one – Tennessee has one good rusher and apparently Carolina now have none. I expect to hear air raid sirens during the first half until the team in the lead in the third quarter tries their hand at running the ball more than just once in a while. So, this might also be a very long game (duration).
