Clemson 83, UNC 64

Tar Heels vs Tigers boxscore

Let's get one thing out of the way. Those twenty-five turnovers? One was a completely bogus charge called on Dexter Strickland. No, this team only had twenty-four turnovers. How could they lose?

I'm really beginning to wonder if Roy Williams is running out of ideas to try with this team. To say the Heels came out flat is the understatement of the year-to-date. Carolina was down 7-0 before they took a shot. Things got so bad in the early going Williams' called a timeout with 12:34 left in the first half. (It may have even helped. UNC was only outscored 56-54 the rest of the way.) Carolina was down by twenty before ten minutes had elapsed and never cut it closer than eleven. And it was a winnable game through most of the futility; although Clemson built up a lead with a combination of fast breaks and hot outside shooting (7 for 12), they missed their last 14 straight three point attempts and never got the ball inside to Trevor Booker as often as they should.

Again, all through the game the turnover situation was based on an inexperienced backcourt. That's a pretty facile observation, though, and doesn't take into account the fact that things got worse the more seniority the Heels put on the court. The starting five combined for 30 points and 17 turnovers; the five-freshman blue team rang up 34 and only 6 turnovers. The team improved when Williams pulled the first five two minutes in the second half to give them a crash course in beating a press (it didn't take), unfortunately the starters came back and things slid downhill again. Dexter Strickland was tonight's Player Who Played Like He Cared™,  scoring 17 points on 7-8 shooting, and nabbing 3 apiece in rebounds, assists, steals, and turnovers. Travis Wear, getting increased playing time with Tyler Zeller out with a foot injury, had a team leading eight rebounds, even if he had the same ball-stripped-from-the-waist shot as every other big man for the Heels.

Ed Davis was a non-factor, shut down by Trevor Booker and the inability of the Heels to run a set offensive play without the ball bouncing, slipping, or sailing out of bounds. UNC only had six more rebounds than Clemson, and the Tigers would have had more if their shots didn't have an infuriating habit of actually going in the hoop. UNC was completely destroyed in this game, completely unable to mount even the beginning of a comeback once they fell behind.

I feel at this point I could cut-and-paste the conclusion from any of the last fifteen recaps here. Young team, lots of talent, too many turnovers, no drive, wake up call, maybe they'll get better. I don't envy Roy Williams right now; I have no idea what I would do in his situation. (Although bench the starters is the first thing to come to mind.) I think it was the exact play pictured above where I just burst out laughing. At lest if UNC is going to lose, they'll lose with entertaining futility. I still believe they'll be good at some point, I'm just no longer certain it'll be this season.

That being said, if they're still playing this poorly come Duke, the language on this blog may no longer be suitable for all audiences.

Great summary

I think it’s too bad Roy didn’t watch the freshmen play at the start of the 2nd half. He may not have returned the starters. It’s going to be interesting to see what happens when he sees the film.

Agreed. The 5 frosh actually looked more composed than the starting 5.

It utterly amazes me how the team acted like they never saw the press before.

I didn't watch the 2nd Half

I knew this game was over after the first 10 minutes of the first half. The Heels have height, but not much bulk. Thompson is the only guy big enough to bang. This loss was disheartening. When the season started, I didn’t think the Heels would be 1-2 against teams from the Palmetto State.

Oh well, the Heels are still better than NC State…

Ginyard

What’s the deal? Is he still pretty banged up? I have never seen someone regress as much as he has. I know he was hurt last week but he has made more mental mistakes in the last 2 games than he has his whole time at UNC. He is in no way doing what Noel did for UNC after the 05 championship. His leadership has been piss poor.

The only bright spot so far for me has been Strickland. He has taken to playing the #1 pretty quickly and is the only player with any explosiveness to the tin.

It’s not worth comparing him to Noel because a: Noel is a more vocal player and embraced the leadership role – Noel also stayed healthy. The players that came in in 05-06 came in with a little better chemistry. They also had an on-court leader in Tyler Hansbrough, and that team probably was more athletic (Noel, Terry, Green, etc.) particuarly on the wing and PF position than this team is. Frasor while not athletic was substantially more heady and savvy of a player than either of the frosh guards that have come in. It’s two different teams with two different styles. We just have to absorb the lumps this team will take and hope they grow from it.

And fwiw, for those thinking that Ed Davis is NBA material? He’s still got a ways to go … he still has no jump shot outside of 8 feet (at this point in his career, guys like Antawn, Rasheed, Tyler did) and still needs to improve on his interior toughness and defensive positioning. Some of the attempted blocks he wiffed on or fouled on were results of poor positioning defensively.

Booker had a nice game and Clemson finally showed some touch outside early on (and from the line)

Good luck with the balance of the season. It looks like NC will be back as soon as these freshmen get a little more experience under their belts.

weights?

I am new here but a childhood heel fan. So i am wondering if these boys know where the weight room is? Correct me if i am wrong but i don’t remember having this many bigs and they all look like twigs. I think that the lose of Stephenson(sp) hurts now because he was stacked when he got to Chapel Hill. We need someone down low to bulk up and get mean.

They're Definitely Thin

And people are writing off Henson in particular for the year because of it. There’s not much you can do about at this point that won’t end with you in front of a Congressional committee, but from Williams’ comments I’m pretty sure he’s sending them to the weight room as often as possible.
