Ten Years of Tempo-Free, Conference Only Stats: UNC

I'm still not much in the writing mood, so here's another post of numbers. This is the first part of my planned working back through the last ten years of tempo-free statistics. Compare to the preliminary numbers for this season if you'd like.

Wow the Doherty defenses were really bad, weren't they?

Indeed, they were...

and Roy’s have been consistently trashed without much factual basis. They don’t play Duke/Memphis/UConn defense, but so far in 09 they grade out better than Clemson, Pitt, UCLA, Oklahoma, and Arizona State. I would wager a guess that most of the talking heads would say all of those teams play better defense, but the tempo-free numbers tell a much different story.

True.

It does seem like I’m hearing less complaints about UNC’s defense this year than in years past, though (despite the fact that they’re giving up the most points per possession since 2004). I’m thinking possession-based stats may finally be catching on with the broadcaster crowd.
