UNC 103, Presbyterian 64
Sometimes, the postgame interviews tell you everything you need to know about a game. And when the two biggest topics of conversation coming out of Saturday's game were a) the players that didn't play and b) that Roy Williams got an opposing fan tossed from the place, well, you know you didn't miss much of a game.
The big news was the sitting of Marcus Ginyard and Dexter Strickland for minor injuries, which bumped Justin Watts into a starting role and Marc Campbell to the first point guard off the bench. Presbyterian, of course, had already gone the Heels one better, by red shirting all three of their returning starters for the season, to stockpile talent for next year when they join the Big South. And that's all you need to know, really.
For the record, Watts was on the court for 23 minutes and Campbell 14; both had three assists apiece. The game was mostly put away by the Heels' big men, as you'd expect against a team that played two players taller than 6'6". The Heels managed 48 rebounds, only Travis Wear had more than one foul (he had two), and everyone got a nice little post-exam workout. If you want to worry about anything, you can fret over the fact that a Blue Hose player tied his school's single-scorer record against Carolina. Of course that was only 29 points, and you figure someone has to get the team to 64, so why not Chase Holmes?
The Heels get to spend the week preparing for Texas and worrying about the health of their guards. The Blue Hose will return home to the largest bronze statue of a Scotsman in the world before playing Ohio State.
And the fan removal? Either it was a drunk fan in the wrong seat or a complete abuse of power. I can't really bring myself to care.

It’s hard for me to care either, but at the same time, if Roy lets it go, then nothing will be made of it and everyone moves on. Instead, he just gives other fans (on the road, esp. in the ACC) more ammo to come after him. It’s just hard to tell whether it had more to do with protecting his player, or having to feel the necessity to lash out and the “fat cat” seat area people either not showing up or allowing visiting fans to sit in those seats. Who knows … I know that I’ve sat many a game during the Dean/Gut era in the lower level and ushered at Smith Center events in the mid-late 90s and there was stuff much worse spewed by visiting fans at our players that went unnoticed. Sending a message to a drunk PC guy wouldn’t have been my choice … perhaps against dook now … (ala Coach Smith and the SAT remarks back in the day …)
The newest explanation makes a little bit more sense. Twenty rows behind the bench is generally filled with former players and friends of the program – I remember seeing Warren Martin in that area a lot when I was in school – and Williams have shown a lot of interest in the seating arrangements of the Dean Dome, including moving a lot of the older alumni players from the upper deck to the lower level. In an otherwise slow game, I can see him definitely wanting to know why a Presbyterian fan was sitting there.
Even so, discreetly finding out what seat he was in and dealing with it after the game wold have been a better option, I think.
Thanks TH
That puts it in a little different light now.
But I agree -after the game would have been more appropriate.
I mean, if Roy was here during the 02 game against NC State where 60% of the Smith Center was Red, “WOLF-PACK” chants went on during the game, and some State fans got so revved up about the win they were screaming some nasty stuff at our players … he would have had a stroke.
Or, he should come to the football games to hear what some of the visiting fans (especially State fans) say about our team.
So one tossing PC fan in the grand scheme of things to me was just adding fuel to the fire.
It's not the crime. It's the cover up.
Victim of Roy’d Rage Calls UNC SID a Liar
“We were having a good time at the game watching my little team get whipped by mighty UNC. I also was absolutely not intoxicated. Initially I wasn’t really upset, more dumbfounded by the situation until I read [UNC SI Director] Kirschner’s spin. That is absolutely wrong to say those false things about me and to lie about what Coach Williams told his guys to do. Look at the video. Kirschner is lying about what Coach Williams instructed his goons to do.”
