Game Thread: Duke

Duke Blue Devils at North Carolina Tar Heels, Nov 7, 2009 3:30 PM EST

Forget the bell, I want one of those wicked ram sweaters. Game starts at 3:30, and it's beyond time to bring the Dukies back to earth.

here, I was having computer trouble but I’m locked and loaded for this. Keeping the victory bell is important.

Field Goal

we’re running the ball well, two missed deep balls but we’ll be alright there are things there. our defense is up next and this is what I have been waiting to see.

It's Been a While

since UNC had a scoring drive to start the game. Decent sign, even if it should have been 7.

by T.H. on Nov 7, 2009 3:44 PM EST reply actions

agreed

we definitely needed to put points up.

Typing on an iPod, about as well as UNC tackled on that kick return.

He’s hurt, shoulder or something. I hope not a clavicle.

Oh Crap

Gave up a huge retern to the Vernon kid from Duke. Can’t have that. the defense better be ready for the quick passes

wasted play

duke wasted a play but I know that Cut is trying to see how tuned in we are.

ItsFELDER

by MichaelFelder on Nov 7, 2009 3:47 PM EST reply actions

Robert Quinn!!

The kid has 12 tfl’s and 8 sacks. that’s how we need to play. Get to the quarterback

ItsFELDER

by MichaelFelder on Nov 7, 2009 3:48 PM EST reply actions

good stand

I don’t trust cutcliffe though. he’s a shifty sob and he’s going to probe until he find something he can use

ItsFELDER

by MichaelFelder on Nov 7, 2009 3:49 PM EST reply actions

Line’s doing well, though. If the secondary can get good coverage early, there should be more than a few sacks out of it.

by T.H. on Nov 7, 2009 3:52 PM EST up reply actions

Draughn

He’s in the locker room getting looked at. Ingersoll is hurt and Lowell Dyer is out for the game with flu.

ItsFELDER

Rough.

They’ll need more from Little, and I think everbody’s twigged onto the one running play he’s used in.

by T.H. on Nov 7, 2009 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

3rd and manageable

As long as we stay in third and manageable we’ll be ok. The Duke defense is going to shift all day that coordinator is a smart guy

I Hope Ryan's in Shape

He’s getting more carries than normal. Little and Elzy will have to spell him because I doubt he can play a whole game

ItsFELDER

by MichaelFelder on Nov 7, 2009 3:57 PM EST reply actions

Well, the Line Was Holding Up

Until the last two plays. If they have to do a pass-heavy offense to spellHouston, it’ll work better than it was last month.

by T.H. on Nov 7, 2009 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

The kid who deflected that pass

zone dogs

I love a good zone dog. they are awesome plays and quarterbacks never expect them

ItsFELDER

Didn't Wake Used to Run the Option?

Shouldn’t they be able to defend against it?

by T.H. on Nov 7, 2009 4:06 PM EST reply actions

Caldwell

Jim Caldwell ran a little bit of the option years ago. None of this Duke or UNC staff except Browning, was at the school when they did. Grobe’s team ran a lot of “wing t” early under Grobe. Until about 2007-2008. They went more pro style and again neither Cut nor Butch was here when they ran that.

ItsFELDER

by T.H. on Nov 7, 2009 5:55 PM EST up reply actions

Good Stand

Good shot, holding them to 3. I’ll take that after the block.

ItsFELDER

by MichaelFelder on Nov 7, 2009 4:13 PM EST reply actions

It helps that Duke wants to get the running game going through Lewis, and UNC is having none of it

by T.H. on Nov 7, 2009 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

I don't trust that

I’m telling you, don’t trust that. Cutcliffe is probing. He’s like Andy Reid. He’s gonna find a guy or two on our defense who isn’t doing their job and he’ll keep going there until we overcompensate. then he’ll go somewhere else.

ItsFELDER

by MichaelFelder on Nov 7, 2009 4:16 PM EST up reply actions

Touchdowns

we need TDs not Fgs

ItsFELDER

by MichaelFelder on Nov 7, 2009 4:27 PM EST reply actions

Woody Durham

He just went “light blue curtain” to signify the UNC d-line. that is not, at anytime, acceptable.

ItsFELDER

by MichaelFelder on Nov 7, 2009 4:31 PM EST reply actions

Lewis is looking to the sidelines a lot, often mid-snap count. I don’t know if the D is truly rattling him, or Cutcliffe just wants to change things up often.

by T.H. on Nov 7, 2009 4:33 PM EST reply actions

He's doing what

OU does. They come out in a formation and line up. Fake a snap count. Then look to the sideline and Cutcliffe calls a play based upon what he sees. They’re hoping that we show what sort of coverage, blitz or stunt that we’re in during that time where they “fake snap it” so they can call a play to exploit it.

ItsFELDER

by MichaelFelder on Nov 7, 2009 4:35 PM EST up reply actions

Good on Pianalto for knowing where he first down was.

Seroiusly?

Duke is sacking us? we can’t block Ohgabaase. This is ridiculous

ItsFELDER

by MichaelFelder on Nov 7, 2009 4:42 PM EST reply actions

Horrible long snap? What, one blocked punt wasn’t enough?

by T.H. on Nov 7, 2009 4:43 PM EST reply actions

This sucks

Now we’re dealing with them getting first downs and slowly getting within striking distance.

ItsFELDER

by MichaelFelder on Nov 7, 2009 4:45 PM EST reply actions

Best Position

This is the best position to have Duke it. conventional coaching says they have to run, but they know they can’t run the ball. So now they’re really in a bind. This is the place where running that shotgun styled offense kills you

ItsFELDER

by MichaelFelder on Nov 7, 2009 4:49 PM EST reply actions

No way he got that over the line.

by T.H. on Nov 7, 2009 4:50 PM EST reply actions

WOWOWOW

The kid Thad is just good. He is impressive. They’ve driven right into our house. We need to get a turnover. We cannot have them score and get the ball back after the half

ItsFELDER

by MichaelFelder on Nov 7, 2009 4:52 PM EST reply actions

crap

great, way to stop the clock and give them the ball at the twelve with three free shots

ItsFELDER

by MichaelFelder on Nov 7, 2009 4:54 PM EST reply actions

6-6

Crappy first half offensively. Defensively can’t complain; field position sacrificed those points.

ItsFELDER

by MichaelFelder on Nov 7, 2009 4:59 PM EST reply actions

Hate to say it

I told you, Cutcliffe was finding a way to get positive play. They found our soft spot and adjusted. We need to be strong up the middle, stay in our lanes

ItsFELDER

by MichaelFelder on Nov 7, 2009 5:21 PM EST reply actions

Really? Two straight first downs on QB scrambles?

by T.H. on Nov 7, 2009 5:21 PM EST reply actions

Our DTs

were getting out of their rushing lanes and he exploited it.

ItsFELDER

by MichaelFelder on Nov 7, 2009 5:22 PM EST up reply actions

What that means

Is that now Austin, Powell, Thomas etc, will be slower and more disciplined, which will give Lewis a place to step up in the pocket.

ItsFELDER

by MichaelFelder on Nov 7, 2009 5:23 PM EST up reply actions

Shoop

There we go, shoop realizes we need to open the playbook up a little bit

ItsFELDER

by MichaelFelder on Nov 7, 2009 5:27 PM EST reply actions

There we go, play action is working. The Heels are moving the ball. We cannot stop this progress. Stay on the attack Shoop
