What to Expect Thursday in Blacksburg

I tried yesterday to write about the current state of ACC football, but two sentences in I lost all interest. Frankly, ACC Roulette is a lot more interesting when UNC is in the thick of things. At two games behind Duke in the conference standings, I can't really bring myself to care about the bigger picture. I don't want to do the math on the Heels' ever-dwindling bowl hopes. I can only hold two thoughts in my head right now – Virginia Tech is on Thursday, and basketball season starts in thirteen days.

So, Virginia Tech. UNC's defense has performed particularly well against the Hokies in recent years, in no small part because they contained Tyrod Taylor's rushing, holding him to near-season lows on the ground, and not allowing anything more than an average performance in the air, either. But this season Taylor has taken himself out of the running, so to speak, cutting back on his scrambling in favor of traditional, pocket passing. And for the most part it's worked, as the offense is averaging a full yard and a half more per play than in the three previous years, primarily on the backs of Ryan Williams and cohorts rushing. The offense is as successful as Florida State's, but more run-oriented, and I can still see UNC holding them to a touchdown and a couple of field goals.

Of course, the Carolina defense could hold the Hokies scoreless and still lose by twenty, as UNC's less than precise offense has to face Tech's defense. Virginia Tech has forced six Carolina turnovers in their last two meetings, and that was when the Heels had an offensive line stronger than tissue paper. I had put aside this excellent analysis of their defense, and it's worth a read, but it doesn't really apply to Thursday's game. Almost every defense has stopped UNC without breaking a sweat, and I don't expect this game to be any different.

Let's face it. This game will be full of indignities, up to and including the opening charge on the field. But it's not like it'll be on national TV or anything.

We’re a huge dog and I think that our defense will take it upon themselves to go on a redemption ride starting in Blacksburg.

Our ground is coming together all signs point to Cam Holland playing and I think that we’ll be able to get some good runs against their defense. Throwing the football will be a challenge as Kam Chancellor and Stephan Virgil are as legit as they come.

We need this game and I think the team knows that. Butch Davis has a way of getting our guys up for showcase games. Last week they didn’t close the door and this week as a road dog I think he stresses this games importance for bowling, recruiting and program notoriety.

We’ll get a good showing.

I'm Trying to Be Optimistic About the Running Game

Especially after last week, but the differences in FSU’s and VT’s run defenses are astronomical. And while any improvement to the offensive line is welcome – Zach Pianalto will be back as well – they’re still very thin.

I’m less sold on the showcase game aspect. That’s resulted in what, wins over Notre Dame and Georgia Tech, the sueaker in Miami, and double losses to VT and NCSU?

Hate to say I told you so haha

TH

I enjoyed the back and forth last night. I hate to say I was right but when it means a Heels win I don’t mind it too bad. Cam Holland made a huge difference when he was in, Lowell played well also and overall we did run the football great 181 is very good.

As for the showcase games they were wins over ND, Rutgers, Miami and the close loss to VT last season.

I was talking with some of my friends and they were explaing it this way to me; Butch thinks national. He puts little merit on the “state championship” that TOB tries to pump up. He’s thinking big picture and that means winning games like last night to show a kid in Ohio, Texas, Arkansas etc that hey come to a school with first class facilities, a new stadium expansion, NFL system and NFL style.

Its all a part of the plan and I like this way; sacrifice some on field coaching prowess to gain in the recruiting program development area.
