North Carolina Tar Heels at Rutgers Scarlet Knights, Sep 11, 2008 7:30 PM EDT

The game starts now, on ESPN. But first:

A Musical Tribute to the Opponent

With Carolina traveling to New Jersey for non-Duke related athletics, it's only appropriate to turn this over to one of the best bands to come out of the Garden State, the Wrens. I've mentioned them before, and UNC went on to, well, not win. But that was under Bunting, and now there's shiny video:

And as a bonus, the band goes acoustic with breakfast cereal:

Go Heels.

Wasn't Expecting...

… the 67 yard touchdown strike on the first play of a drive. 14-6 UNC.

After being really concerned on each teams first drive, I’ve really calmed down. UNC has established a running game, the offensive line is now giving Yates the time to throw, and the defense is working more often than not.

Also, good for UNC for sending the marching band to Jersey for a Thursday night game.

Of Course I Meant...

…17-3. I keep forgetting Wooten’s field goal.

And by 17-3...

… I mean 17-6. The wine’s really good tonight.

UNC Pulls in Their Second Interception

…and a Rutgers fan flips off the ESPN camera. This is the greatest fifteen seconds of Carolina football I’ve seen in quite some time.

24-6

Best drive of the night.

In part, because it was the first full drive for a touchdown of the night, as opposed to the interception and bad punt that started the previous touchdown drives. But it was solid play all around, from Greg Little’s great running, to T.J. Yates, third down collision with the Rutgers defense for a first down to Brandon Tate’s second score of the night at superhuman speed. Damn.

It's Official

Everything is going UNC’s way, with Carter’s interception (The Heels’ third) off a tipped pass for the fourth touchdown and a 31-6 lead. Even with the football bouncing Carolina’s way though, last year’s team wouldn’t have been able to capitalize on these sorts of opportunity. Props to the defense for knowing where to be and what to do.

Damn good football!

I am a UK fan and young enough to have some fun jabbing but old enough to believe that there is UK, UNC, Kansas, UCLA and then the rest in all of sports.

I feel like we both (and those guys who wear dark blue in your state) got trapped as “Basketball Schools.” SCREW THAT!

UNC looks GREAT tonight. Rutgers looks like JV. Not what I was used to see as I have watched them to root against Louisville.

I am sure you have seen the actual court room video of Duke’s lawyers arguing to get out of paying Louisville $150k for dropping the game right? Look it up if not. They actually plead that Dukes is the worst team in football and therefore UL made more money by loosing to UTAH on ESPN. Hilarious.

Take care guys. Good luck the rest of the season. Looking real good!

Re: Damn good football!

Yeah, I’m going to enjoy this for quite some time.

You know, considering how good Kentucky looked against Louisville, and UCLA’s success against Tennessee and Kansas’ football resurgence, football season is beginning to look a lot like basketball season.

If only we hadn’t worn the Kentucky Duke navy blue pants.

:-)

I was a little taken back by that myself.

UNC, UK and Kansas and even UCLA understand the tradition that comes with our schools and it was odd to see a new color thrown in. Duke and their black crap if fad city.

Well we even did it when that guy Pitino had us in freaking denim for a season. And then those ugly ass “cat scratch” pants. Glad he tinkers with Looserville now :-)

Great game!!
